Pacific Northwest Family Summer Vacation - Day 1 - Planning, Travel Day & Portland

I'm not quite sure how I had become fascinated and curious about Oregon in recent years, but the desire to go was at an all time level throughout 2017. My desire to both show the kids and see for myself areas of the U.S. that I haven't seen, is fueling my vacation planning love. We decided 2018 was our year to have a family trip of a life time to the Oregon coast. In early January 2018, I felt incredibly intimidated planning our trip but after randomly deciding on a week to take a Southwest flight into Portland, it just all fell into place over the next several weeks. By mid February, we were completely booked and the fun of studying both the history and current landscape of that region of the country commenced. I am even listing to books about the Oregon Trail in the car, for fun! It's all so interesting.

Day 1 - Travel Day

The 9:30AM Southwest Airlines flight was very smooth, connecting in Houston. The kids did absolutely fantastic on the 2 flights. We were super excited to land in Portland around 1:30 Pacific time, but then the real world hit and we found at baggage claim that one of our 2 main clothing bags, had not made the flight and it held 100% of Blake and my’s clothing. That was a pretty stressful feeling and I was worried that someone had taken our bag but I had faith and stayed positive. We moved on to the rental car place, where our reserved car that we had confirmed was not available. Again, we tried to stay positive and it ended being okay with a large Ford Flex, instead of a mini-van. We made it to the Embassy Suites Downtown Portland, which was a truly wonderful hotel for us, in the most ideal location. The reception was filled with dogs, as Portland is a super dog friendly city, which seemed to make everything much better, upon arrival, without our suitcase.  We embarked in the late afternoon heat to find a cool place to eat but after a long day, we weren't feeling the Portland Beer Festival, so we chilled out at Portland Burger before returning to the hotel for a restful night’s sleep.
