Dear Delaney at 5 Years Old

Dear Delaney,

At 5 years old, you a truly are a joy of child! You definitely have gained a significant amount of independence this past year, yet, you still remind us how you are our baby and probably will always be.

At school you are confident and are thriving. You surprised us by knowing all 7 of the continents recently and where they are located. You can write your name, letters and numbers well. If your siblings are practicing spelling or math, you are asking for your own problems right there with them! You came home recently saying you "had a lot of math work at school" and when you brought me the papers, your "math work," was learning to write the numbers.  Yes, a very important part of learning math, indeed! Of course you talk about playing with Asher at school but I what I recall clearly of seeing, being told about and you talking about, as you turned 5, was your nurturing of baby Declyn. He's 3 and in your after school class. You have taken him under your wing and really help him out. I have seen you with him on the playground when I pick you up and see how you both run up to one another to give each other hugs when you leave. It's really sweet. You are so excited about going to Elementary school and we will always remember the melt down you had the week of your 5th birthday, when daddy told you that you don't get to actually start Roan Forest on your 5th birthday. After years of being told that you "start elementary when you are 5," you of course took this news hard.

Sleeping is another part of you at 5 that we will want to look back on. You sleep with one of your family members, EVERY SINGLE night. Majority of the time, it is Addie that you choose although Carter will always offer. You must be sleeping close to a warm body and usually not just close to but snuggled right up on. Majority of the time, you sleep like a star fish, with your 4 extremities out it all 4 directions! We decided to quit fighting this need of yours that you have had since you were a toddler and just give in as long as your sister doesn't mind. You pediatrician didn't have any problem with it as long as Addison is completely fine with it and is getting a good night's sleep.

Your 4th year has been filled with activities, doing swim lessons to get the basics down and more importantly your confidence up. Gymnastics was every Monday afternoon for nearly 6 months before you decided to switch to ballet a couple of months before you turned 5. You struggle, right at 5 year old, deciding which one you love the most - but you enjoy putting on your all pink ballet outfit and dancing around with the 4 other little girlfriends at QBS Dance Studio. You say your favorite part is the end of class, when you get to do "free dance," and your teacher gives you crowns and wands to dance with. You start your first season of soccer in a couple of weeks and we are so excited to finally cheer you on with your daddy coaching!

Your personality is still pretty rule bound and you have quite the funny comments at times. You really do say some funny things and mature things like "let me rephrase," as you were telling a story the week before you turned 5. You are a little sponge and still extremely articulate. You are strong willed and confident in many things but a sweet little cuddle bug that follows rules in every thing else. Bottom line, you are a wonderful little girl at 5 years old!

We love you so much!

Mommy and Daddy
