A large part of this second half of 4th grade, from an extra-circular school standpoint was SONIDO, Roan Forest's student percussion group made up of 4th and 5th graders. After a wonderful first semester in choir, Carter was passionate about this instrumental group and found as much time as possible to practice in between soccer practice 3 days during the week, church and school work. SONDIO and Mr. Trevino definitely helped uncover a passion of Carter's. I heard stories from multiple people over the semester of how Mr. Trevino would divide the class in 2 and Carter would instruct one half while Mr. Trevino would take the other. For about a month in April, SONIDO was practicing nearly every day after school and Carter was adamant about making all the practices and still managed to get his homework completed by the time we would pick him up at 5 to eat dinner and get to soccer by 6PM. By the end of April, all their practice had paid off and they had their BIG performance!
Carter managed a straight A average in all classes all year long and took an interest in cursive mid-semester. Three months later, he is still practicing on a regular basis. Carter achieved Mastery in all 3 subjects of 4th grade STAR testing - Math, Reading and Writing, only missing 1 math problem in total.
This is what he would look like every single Friday! |
Some of Carter's artwork was chosen for The NEISD Young Masters Art Show and we were lucky that 2 years in a row, we were able visit the show, on the way to soccer practice, since it was just across the street.
Carter also participated in UIL this year. With SONIDO, Lighthouse Team, soccer and school work - he wasn't able to practice as much as he wanted but it was a great intro into the academic competition.
Early in the Semester, the kids both worked on Reflections and Carter designed his "perfect" ball!
Spring Student led conferences went really well. The only significant thing Carter had to work on was getting his desk a little bit more organized!
Towards the end of the year, Blake and I both got to chaperone his 4th grade field trip to the Witte Museum.
Late May, we were all back on campus for WATCH DOGS, Field Day and Addison's 9th Birthday!
In April, Carter was selected for the 800 meter run for his first ever NEISD Elementary Track Meet. He and Mateo both were running for Roan Forest and it ended up being an incredibly exciting race as Carter went on to pass the runner in 2nd place just at the end.
The end of May, Carter also was selected for Battle of The Books (this was his 2nd time since he had gotten a spot for his 3rd grade class at Vineyard the year before.) Mom was traveling for work in San Diego but got to watch in live using Marco Polo app.
All year long, Carter and Addison held leadership roles on the school's Lighthouse Team, as their grade level's representatives. Every couple of weeks, they would have meetings after school and Carter would be in charge of a script to write for the announcements. He loves that kind of thing.
We had no idea he had Spring pictures on this day and giggled when we saw how they posed him with his hand in his basketball pocket.
Ms. Esparza has been a wonderful teacher and Blake and I celebrated with Carter and his entire class on the very last day of school!
Notes received about Carter:
"Your children are so special. They are so motivated to do their very best. They are hard workers, they are great at learning. Their curiosity and eagerness to learn is so amazing. I have spent a while just watching Carter learn. He is a fantastic student. We all know that he loves sports and is very competitive. He uses that drive in the academic setting as well. When the rest of the boys are giggling at something silly that has been said Carter is analyzing the deeper meaning of the lesson and does not dwell on things that are not going to get him ahead. We are very grateful that the Brown kids are with us."
- Need to put Ms. Esparza's note from end of year
