The 12 Weeks of Summer 2017 were pretty perfect. Yes, they were crazy busy but I love that they watched a total of 10 hours of TV all Summer and about 2 hours of video games, and had so many new experiences. I still remember my summer camp experiences at these ages and all the things I learned. Choosing camps and getting them registered is a full-time job come March and driving all over the city during certain weeks is less than ideal, but I love that on August 25, I wouldn't have changed one thing this Summer.
Week 3 - Camp Invention
This first time camp for the kids got absolutely raving reviews from both Carter and Addison. I absolutely love every single thing about what they were doing, working on and talking about in this camp. Carter has made half a dozen duck tape wallets, a homemade sling shot, homemade finger rocket. He even came home on the 3rd night and drew a prototype for a bird house that has a bird bath incorporated on it. He labeled the materials and how he would put the parts together. Addison absolutely loves it to, saying that half the class are girls. She and Carter were on a team today coming up with a plan on how to launch a rocket. Carter even made a local newspaper with the sling shot he made.
Week 4 - Nike Basketball Camp
Addison loved being there with Ella Madrid. They loved that some of the coaches learned they were fluent in Spanish and would talk to them, especially Addison. On the last day, Addison received the "Hustle Award!"
Week 6 - Dominion Sports Camp
This was Delaney's first every year and she had no doubts about it! This is such a big tradition that Yaya and Grandpa have given the kids for 7 straight Summers. I will always remember Carter's first Mightly Muscles in 2010 and Addison's first year in 2011! It didn't hurt that her bestie, Asher, was there with her. This year marked Addison and Carter's 7th & 6th straight year at Dominion Sports Camp. Carter had been going since 4 and Addison had just turned 3. To mark this special occasion, Carter designed custom "Cousin Camp" shirt and Julie executed them perfectly! This week is also special because they get to spend the whole week with their cousin Ainsley. It was fun seeing them all together! On Friday, Delaney got her award for swimming, which brings a huge smile to all of us since 6 months ago, she would barely get in the water! Part of the fun of this week is that Grandpa and YaYa pick up the kids and take them for an after camp treat to Bahama Bucks, Sonic or Orange Leaf.
Week 7 - VBS and "It takes a Village Camp Week!"
It was Camp Perkins on Monday after VBS where they played outside all afternoon. Aunt Julie was incredible with them Tuesday and Wednesday with full afternoons of major crafting and Wednesday at Fiesta Texas. Ya-Ya took them to a movie on Thursday! All the time, but especially this week, we are thankful for all our close friends and family that help us out during the Summer.
Week 9 - Camp Adventure Mom
Week 10 - Camp Humane at the San Antonio Humane Society
I love how they came home and couldn't stop telling me about their new experiences and asking us questions like, "Is Tiger micro-chipped? You know It's a law mom, right?!" They also met and got to see the shelter veterinarians, in action. They found out how much money it takes to run the shelter, broken down by how much animal per day ($35) and wanted to do the math to find that their operating budget must be around 1.9 million dollars/per year. They found out that they are 50-60 full time paid employees and how important volunteers are. They cleaned and learned who to take pictures of the dogs and what type of pictures help get the most adoptions. They had someone bring rescue horses, rabbits and numerous other animals. They learned about service animals and also got to run an agility course with some dogs. They have 2-3 guest speakers each day. It was such a great week and they are definitely enlightened about the need for a place like this in San Antonio. I am certain, due to this week, rescue shelters will always have a place in their hearts for the rest of their lives.
When I asked Carter at the end of the Summer what his favorite memories were, he said: (in no particular order)
- Getting in the newspaper with his invention at Camp Invention
- Having Addie with him at Nike Basketball Camps
- Camp Tejas' Sky Jump - "It was so fun and felt like floating but it really did take faith."
- At TBARM, I loved everything, but getting to know my counselors so well, was my favorite.
- I loved going to the Toyota plant... I will never look at a Tundra again the same way!
- The fish hatchery was cool and feeding the millions of fish that suddenly appeared!
- Laser tag at Dominion because we were back in the woods and they were really nice laser guns and equipment.
- Catching all the crabs at night when we went to the beach the three times!
- "At Camp Humane, we got to see our first surgery. I had never seen that before...it was a spay."
- I really like TJ at Nike Basketball camp!
