Megan at 39
My 39th really was truly a great day. I woke up feeling great and the family had gotten up early to make my very favorite egg, basil omelet and started bring in my gifts. I got a fun coffee drink table for my beloved reading room and bed trays that I have said I have wanted for at least 5 years so that I can have breakfast in bed. My bed has always been my favorite go-to place to unwind and relax, alone or usually with the entire family and having a tray to have an occasional breakfast in bed sounds like a dream come true. Who knew I would actually use in within 2 minutes of opening it! I had lunch with my mom at a new sushi place I wanted to try out and then my closest office asked me to come over and we celebrated with an ice cream cake. They gave me a warm box of Tiff's cookies and ice cream and milk to take home to enjoy with the family. Delaney came home with lots of home-made birthday cards and she had her classmates make me birthday cards too! It was so cute. I told the family that I wanted to try a new hole in the wall place to try so that's what we did and we all loved it! Everyone was so nice at the restaurant and it was a laid back and yummy end to a busy mid week Thursday birthday. As great as I felt today physically and emotionally on my 39th birthday, I hope that is the exact way that I embrace 40, next year!
For my birthday, Blake surprised me with booking a fun date on Segways! We had a private tour of downtown and it couldn't have been a better date.
Since I have done a Top 10 list for the kid's for a decade, I thought it would be fun to look at what I am like at 39.
Favorite quote: Work hard, play harder and be sure to rest. (I modified the end)
Goal: to have a real big girl dining room and living room that I adore by the time I am 4O!
Typical day at this exact age:
- Up at 4:35 for Orange Theory (3-4 days a week) up by 5AM on other days mostly without an alarm getting things done around house. I Iove that this is my 10th anniversary of working out at 5AM.
- Favorite morning routine- Taking kids to school a couple of mornings a week and the quality time driving Carter to middle school and just talking.
- Showered and start work day. Cell phone and calls start firing up most days by 7AM. Conference calls sometimes start by 8. Yesterday, I counted 32 separate text feed conversations going on during the day. I have been with Lilly for 15.5 years and have felt very grateful for finding this company back then and the growth, travel, quality of life, flexibility and friendships it was brought over the last decade and a half.
- Some days, like yesterday, I’m at girls school for meeting or volunteering, racing off to a important lunch appointment and making calls all over town until around 3:40 when I start heading back to towards the house. From 3 ~4 there are constant phone calls regarding helping fellow team mates and running my MOM2MOM network. Yesterday, Eli Lilly announced they were upgrading our parental leAve from 16 weeks to 28 weeks and 20 weeks for men! This was such a huge announcement and resulted in many calls from several of my recently delivered BACK2WORK Lilly moms, with questions!
- Yesterday, I also was balancing running around picking up the curtains and pillows for our living room which was an exciting day working towards a goal I have had to get our 2.5 year old new home more warm and cozy.
- Then, I picked the girls up a little early and while Addie had soccer and I took Delaney with some neighbor friends to The Nutcracker Ballet Tea. It was a special and fun night with Delaney downtown.
- Before bed, it was a rare school night, where all 5 of us hung out on the couch and just relaxed for a few minutes catching up on our day before climbing into bed.
- I finished a couple of work emails following up on a few rep’s feedback too their managers on their impact in efforts to help them get a promotion this year, paid a couple of bills and ordered a couple more Christmas gifts.
- Blake and I climbed into bed and since he drifted off quickly, I watched This is Us and fell asleep around 10:30. (with a cuddly blond-haired 5.5 year old right next to us.) 90% of the time, I am asleep by 9:30 PM every night.
Favorite products and items: Obagi foaming face wash, Aquaphor, Dr watts whitening teeth gel, peppermint oil diffuser in my bathroom. My small gratitude Journal that I have kept for over 8 years, Avon Skin so Soft bath oil.
Pet Peeve - The only thing while driving that gets under my skin is when there is a well known left lane merge up ahead and cars are in long line on right lane and other cars zoom down left lane to get to the front. I like to drive down the middle of the two lanes to help dissuade drivers behind me from doing that and I LOVE it when other's do the same! Blake doesn't agree and just thinks I am crazy! ;)
Random things to remember at 39: My completely 2 black big toe nails from 2 months ago when I hiked 32 miles to Hvasupai Falls.
I have never tried Botox, filler of any type or even any facial treatment besides a basic facial. I try to use retina A a couple times a weeks and AHA in the mornings. I have used SPF 30 every single morning for 10 straight years, under my makeup.
Some on-going struggles at 39: On-going need to color my hair ever 4-5 weeks, due to gray hair. I have never had my hair professionally colored but wonder if this will one day be the one thing I splurge on in the coming years?!
Work life balance- 15.5 years with Lilly and it’s still a huge struggle at this chapter in life. I have been back to full time for the past 3 years since launching Taltz in Dermatology in January 2016. In 2019, I go back and forth contemplating going back to 80% (4 days a week.)
My decor style at 39: I love a timeless look, mix of contemporary and classic, clean but interesting, texture, comfortable and approachable. Enduring materials that hold up have become a big focus. Quality on the big items if classic and timeless. Color scheme I am always drawn too - natural and organic and love the the look of combining natural woods, leather, creams, grays, blacks and whites with (more colorless than pops any major pops of color). Layered grays and whites with some black and wither and of course plenty of texture!
