I don't think there is a better quote to wrap up our friendship over the past 4 years as we have collectively integrated children # 5 and # 6 to our worlds:
"BEST FRIENDS are people you don't need to talk to every single day. You don't need to talk to each other for weeks, (or months, in our recent worlds). But when you do, it's as if you never stopped talking."
Alli hadn't been here since 2014 and I had only been to Houston for quick visits once or twice during the last 4 years. Back in March, I texted Alli and hinted that I wasn't doing great, stressed physically and emotionally, overwhelmed with work and life. Besides being a shining light of encouragement from 3 hours away, in Houston, in that moment, she insisted it was time for a girl's weekend and she was coming to me and she would plan it all. All I had to do was give her one date. So, I told her June 22-24 and set low expectations because I know both of our lives are running at a insane level. Well, fast forward 3 months and Alli and Caroline were lounging in our pool by dinner time on Friday night.
On a whim, she brought her sweet 6 year old daughter, Caroline, and it couldn't have been more perfect of a special treat for Delaney. They played together perfectly all night and Saturday morning. The conversations never stopped for nearly 40 hours straight. After 2 full days, we realized there were important stories we had gotten into the middle of and never finished because it had naturally taken us into a different story.
Early Saturday afternoon, Alli dropped off Caroline at her Grammy's and we headed to the absolutely amazing Hotel Emma down in the Pearl. Wow, I truly had no idea of what an incredible hotel we had in San Antonio. Alli scheduled 90 minute massages to get our "stay-cation" started and I honestly have to say it was hands down, the best massage I have had in 10 years - Brandon at Hiatus is officially one of my new favorite people in the world.
We enjoyed the pool although we barely quit talking long enough to even take in our very trendy San Antonio surroundings on the 3rd floor roof top pool. Then, we quickly cleaned up for our Supper dinner reservations down stairs, where we lingered and talked the night away over Brussel sprouts, braised pork and a delicious white flakey fish I had never had before.
It wasn't until Saturday, that I realized this August 2018, marks 20 years since Alli and I met after pledging Kappa Kappa Gamma at Texas A&M University. Alli is, by far, my favorite thing I got out of Kappa!
