South Dakota: Day 6 - Hot Springs, Mammoth Site, Evan's Plunge & Custer Old Times Photos

Day 6

This was our day to explore Hot Springs, South Dakota, about an hour south of Hill City. It was a pretty drive where we saw more bison. At 10AM we arrived at Mammoth Site. We watched the history video and did the audio app tour around the actual sink hole, where palentologosts and staff were actually working. It was crazy to learn that these gigantic animals fell into this sink hole hundreds of millions years ago and that a local developer found them back in 1974, when he was beginning to build a new neighborhood. The kid’s favorite part was their small private group Mammoth dig. I couldn’t believe how excited Delaney was to do it.

Hot Spring's Evan's Plunge was the best place to go after our 3 hours at Mammoth Site. The 87 degree warm spring water had all 5 of us jumping in within 2 minutes of arrival. We did the 3 slides a ton of times and yet again, Delaney surprised us wanting to go on the big outdoor fast and curvy one! Addison and Carter spent a lot of time on the Tarzan rings that went over the pool. It was a wonderful afternoon for the 5 of us just having a great time together in the water.

On our way back to Hill City, we stopped in Custer to take old time photos. This was something I remembered doing when I was young and knew that South Dakota was the perfect place to go back in time and have some fun!

We had the absolute best hamburgers at Black Hills Burger & Bun in Custer. The kind of meal that is so good that you take photos of the food and walk out of the restaurant with a jar of the secret “Hot Granny Sauce” and a plan to make them at home.
