If there was no soccer practice, our door bell ringing at 4:25PM with the Burek's at our door, is the norm!
And we ended the year with lunch with Delaney!
2nd half of 1st grade:
Delaney's Student Led Conference in early February:
After Christmas...
Just before Spring Break, Delaney had her very first big performance on stage at school after the PTA meeting.
The week after this was Spring Break. The week of Spring Break, due to Corona Virus (COVID19) Global Pandemic, NEISD extended Spring Break for an additional week and then that next week the Governor of Texas closed down all Texas Schools until May 4. At this point I am assuming that school will be cancelled for the rest of the year and I was correct. No one knew this would be Delaney's very last week of traditional 1st grade.
Our first day of homeschooling a dual language 1st grader was not good. It was for multi-factored reasons, learning 3-4 new apps and websites and how they are were all being used and the fact that the lesson plan wasn't clear what was supposed to be done each day and that they asked me to explain what Informational Text is, in Spanish. That combination was too much for me. I emailed Principal daily and got very close with Stephanie Martin and Kira Willingham and we defintley helped one another get through this first month of our new world. My feelings about NEISD virtual schooling were definitely an evolution of feelings that changed every single week for at least 6 weeks. Ultimately, looking back, I have to say that I am largely disappointed with NESID virtual learning experience and really for only one reason. While I respect that we were in a sudden global pandemic with no blue print on how to navigate this, I feel like there was 10 weeks of time, where teachers and schools could have gotten a little better at it each week. I don't feel like there was any progression in capabilities of actually teaching over the 10 weeks. I remember emailing NEISD during the 2nd week asking if they are going to compile a group of parents to help give feedback during this time. They replied that it was a great idea and they would get back to me and yet they never did. If home based learning was to continue into the Fall, I would expect a much higher level of curriculum and teaching, or would immediately look at other options.
