6th grade Fall school pictures, the first day she ever straightened her hair.
Lainey, Ella and Addie watching the school play in early November.
Addison was awarded student of the week award from Mrs. Ocon, in early November.
Then, in early December, this email was sent to us from another teacher and we were blown away.
Since seeing a 6th grader in their school environment is pretty rare, it was fun to snap a picture of Addison getting out of the car, towards the end of the semester with her science earth layer projects that she had done 100% on her own, except for me buying the play-doh and for some last minute labeling help from Carter.
Another exciting moment for Addison and Ella this semester is when the one class that they share, announced that they were doing a fundraiser for a organization that decorates the bedrooms of kids that have cancer. The girls swiftly came up with a plan on their own and one Thursday on December, set up a hot chocolate stand in our neighborhood and raised $193 dollars in 90 minutes time. Their teacher, Mrs. Carsten was equally blown away telling the girls that this was the single largest donation she had ever received in her many years of doing this. We were so proud of the girl's hearts, ideas and implementation.
In reflection, Addison's first half of 6th grade couldn't have gone any better, academically, responsibility, socially and extra-circularly - no doubt, she exceeded our expectations. She was in the 5-10% that didn't have a phone in the first half of 6th grade in middle school. Without the distraction of a phone, she really did set a strong foundation. Like Carter, Addison, easily got straight A's, except surprisingly in her elective, Theater Arts. But I am happy for this B, as it taught Addison a lifelong important lesson on working in groups and how middle school and the rest of life is about working together and choosing your groups wisely. So we aren't upset about that B since tied it was directly tied to a great life lesson. Socially, Addie and Ella's relationship stayed incredibly strong and consistent and Addison got to reconnect with dozens of her old friends from her first 3 years at Vineyard Ranch. She mentioned several times, how she hangs out with all kids of different groups and eats lunch with different friends nearly everyday and that it isn't a big deal at all, it's just what she loves.
Heading back to Lopez for locker clean out was super strange.
When I asked Addison what items would always remind her of Corona homeschool 2020, these are what she brought. She read over 34 books in just 10 weeks and confidently taught herself with online videos to play the Ukulele. We are super proud of her and her extreme dedication to her school and extra circular work during Corona.
After the last week of school, Addison received this large envelope in the mail and we opened it up to find that she received a Merit Award from one of her teachers as well as "A" Honor Role having all AP classes, this achieving 2 of her goals she set for her self the week before 6th grade started!
The week of Spring Break, due to Corona Virus (COVID19) Global Pandemic, NEISD extended Spring Break for an additional week and then that next week the Governor of Texas closed down all Texas Schools until May 4. At this point I am assuming that school will be cancelled for the rest of the year. No one knew this would be Addison's very last day of traditional 6th grade.
The guest bedroom was Addison's school desk for 9 weeks. By the 5th week of homeschool, she was finishing her work by Wednesday morning and the last few weeks, she was confidently done by Tuesday afternoon. She definitely learned the principal of working longer days to be finished.
