The Annual Hunting trip this year had so many firsts. This was the first year that Delaney came with us and spent 2 nights at the Frank's Ranch. This was also the first year that "PaPa Lance" was able to come and share his love for hunting and years of hunting experience, with the kids.
Perhaps the biggest event this year was that Addie was able to kill her first deer with her dad and 2 of her Grandpa's with her. Addie hunted with Pop's the first day but didn't see anything worth shooting. I sat in the stand with her the next morning and we saw several small deer. Just as we were getting ready to leave, a massive buck crossed the road about 100 yards away. It was hard to tell exactly how big, but I just told Addie to get her gun up and shoot. She quickly did just that and the deer fell backwards, then jumped back up and ran in the brush. We waited about 10 minutes and walked down to start tracking the deer down. Surprisingly, we were not able to find it quickly. In fact, after tracking this deer for 3 hours and almost a mile, we lost the trail at the pond and could not find it again. It appears that Addie did hit the deer, but just grazed it.
Not to be deterred, Addie went out the following morning with PaPa and Carter. I stayed back with Delaney, who was not in the early waking up kind of mood that day. Perhaps it was Carter in the stand that was good luck, as Addison shot and killed a great 9 pointer about an hour into the hunt. She was so excited and thankfully we didn't have to track this one, as it dropped and never got back up.
It was so nice to watch how excited Papa got and to watch him teach all three kids his decades of experience, gutting, cleaning and quartering the deer.
