How Mr. Alfaro taught Carter to read for the best comprehension:
1. Label each paragraph by number. #1, #2, # 3...
Read the story 2 to 3 times. (slow down and don't be in a rush.) *This is hard.
2. Read again and underline the most important words in each paragraph.
3. To the side of the short paragraph, draw a simple stick picture of what is happening in the story.
4. Read the comprehension questions.
5. When you answer each question, take time to circle the answer in the story. (in 2nd grade, it is word for word.)
6. Next to each question and answer, write which paragraph # you found it in. Ex) P. #1 or P. #5
We have been truly blown away by Carter's 2nd Grade teacher this year - a true example of the kind of true life long influence a teacher can have on a young impreshiable child.

Mr. Alfaro told us parents, THE FIRST WEEK of school that he sets VERY high goals for his students and in his 16 years of teaching, he has learned that they can handle it and will flourish. A couple of months ago, Carter came home saying they set a goal to be the very best behaved students in the entire school; that last year Mr. Alfaro's class had won this award and he wanted to win it again. Sure enough, they won and before we knew it were performing a special show during a big presentation the school was having.
Then came the class goal of not only having the highest reading benchmark scores in the entire 2nd grade but he went on to say "the entire district."
The homeworks the 6 weeks before were tough and for the first time ever, Carter was coming home with reading comprehension grades of 30's, 40's and 50's. Mr. Alfaro emailed us parents and said he would not be sending home that part as homework for the next month, instead they would continue to do it together as a class to practice the amazing 5 step process he swore by.
I will always remember how impressed I was when during the Valentine's Day Party, he took the opportunity to show us parents the 5 step technique so that we could continue to reinforce it at home. Wow... I had NEVER had a teacher do that before! His passion for teaching is exceptional and what you dream for your children.
So the reading benchmark test time came in late February and we pretty quickly learned they had scored the best in the school but we had to wait longer for the district's results. But then on a Wed bes day evening, we received this adorable email. While reading it... I could just feel the sense of excitement from Carter's teacher as he typed....
So just the perfect examples of how Mr. Alfaro is right when he says that kids will elevate themselves to reach high goals!!!
