Day 1
We left town around 10:30AM on Friday morning. We had packed and prepared for a week. After a couple of unexpected stops, we were off with the Perkins just behind us, excited for our big journey. It took around 5.5 hours to Marathon where we arrived 5PM Friday for an impromptu stop at the historic Gage Hotel. The weather was absolutely amazing and we grabbed a delicious margarita from the famous White Buffalo bar. With drink in hand, we walked across the street and railroad tracks to the Gage Gardens and explored those grounds for nearly an hour until our 6PM reservation was ready at 12 Gage restaurant. (The restaurant doesn't open until 6PM.) We enjoyed an amazing steak and bison pot pie and dined on their outdoor patio and couldn’t have asked for a more perfect night one on our family vacation to far West Texas. The only down side to having so much fun in Marathon was the long and dark 90 minute drive through Alpine to Terlingua and our casita at Far Flung. Although it was only a hare past 9PM, it was so dark and felt well past midnight before we arrived. If I were to do it again, I would leave San Antonio by 9AM to have time in Marathon but still get to Terlingua a little earlier. Spending one night at The Gage might me a fun option, as well, but I don't know what else there would be do do that we didn't experience except seeing more of the haunted hotel and visiting some of the cute shops. After unpacking the cars, the four of us adults sat up talking and watching the Milky Way and even witnessed a couple of memorable “shooting stars.”
